Medical Physics 2021 Student Cohort Success

​​​​​​​MedicalPhysics2021​​​​​​​Like in past years, graduates of the Cleveland State University MS in Physics – Medical Physics Specialization, have been met with great success in the residency matching process. Administered by the American Association of Physicists in Medicine, this highly competitive program coordinates the placement of graduates from CAMPEP accredited programs into the two-year residency required as part of the certification of medical physicists. In the 2021 CSU Medical Physics cohort 5 out of 6 students that have applied for medical physics residencies have been matched. This far exceeds the national averages (https://natmatch.com/medphys/statistics.html) speaking to the strength of the program. Founded more than 20 years ago, the joint program between Cleveland State University (CSU) and Cleveland Clinic Foundation (CCF), has a track record of excellence in providing a steady pipeline of medical physicists to local and national health institution.

​​​​​​​Graduates of the program have provided a positive contribution to the Physics Department and the University. Many of them have been an integral part of our undergraduate teaching experience, serving as teaching assistants in the introductory physics labs, while in the same time participating in research at CCF dedicated to their discipline. It has been a pleasure and an honor working with them over the last couple of years and we wish them the best of luck as they move on and continue making a difference in the lives of others on their imaging and therapy paths in medical physics. ​​​​​​​

​​​​​​​​​​​​​​PaltaniJames will attend Upstate Medical Physics, in their Diagnostic Imaging Residency Program in Victor, New York. He is currently performing research at the CCF in fluoroscopic imaging under the supervision of Dr. Kevin Wunderle (CSU alumnus). They are in the process of publishing a paper on fluoroscopic imaging for the AAPM, American Association of Physicists in Medicine. ​​​​​​​


 

​​​​​​​WinieckiJoe will attend the Medical University of South Carolina’s (MUSC) Radiation Oncology Medical Physics Residency Program in Charleston, South Carolina beginning July 1st, 2021. He is currently performing research at the CCF in Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy (VMAT) and traditional AP/PA treatment techniques to interfractional patient setup position shifts under the supervision of Dr. Bingqi Guo.​​​​​​​


 

Bonifaz​​​​​​​Andres will attend the Medical Physics Residency at the University of Louisville, in Louisville, Kentucky. He is on the radiation therapy track. He is currently performing research at the CCF in brachytherapy under the supervision of Dr. Alan Wilkinson. They are in the process of publishing a paper called "Preliminary Studies of a New Method for Confirming the Activity of Ru-106 Plaques for Uveal Melanoma". His previous research project from last fall was accepted as an Oral Presentation at the Penn-Ohio Chapter.


 

PoduskiTina will attend the Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana on the radiation therapy track. She is currently performing research at the CCF under the supervision of Dr. Lan Lu. She is collecting and analyzing breathing curves off a 4-D CT machine to see if there are any large discrepancies shared between phase binned and amplitude binned images with the goal of being able to utilize machine learning meeting.


 

Kulkarni​​​​​​​Aishwarya will attend her residency at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center in Diagnostic & Nuclear Medicine in Cleveland, Ohio beginning July 2021.  She is currently performing research at the CCF under the supervision of Dr. Allan Wilkinson. She is working on second check High Dose Rate (HDR) brachytherapy quality assurance measures.

 


Burgdolt​​​​​​​Madison has accepted the position of Medical Physics Assistant at CARTI in Little Rock, Arkansas. She is currently performing research at the CCF under the supervision of Dr. Gennady Neyman. She is working on the comparison between Computed Tomography and Cone Beam Computed Tomography stereo localization for patients treated with a frame on Icon Gamma Knife.
