The Math Club will return in the Fall. Meanwhile, have a wonderful summer!
Mock U.S. Presidential Election: Results! With the help of our members, the votes were tallied. In our Mock U.S. Presidential Election (a highlight event of the Math Awareness Month 2008 http://www.mathaware.org/), 156 ballots were submitted. You can find a copy of the actual ballot by clicking HERE. Here are the results: Ballot A - Plurality Voting In plurality voting, each voter is allowed to vote for only one candidate. That means, only the first-choice candidate of each voter matters. The candidate with the largest number of votes wins. Ballot A uses plurality voting to arrive at a decision.
In preferential voting, voters are asked to rank candidates in order of preference. Several decision methods can be used based on the rankings. Ballot B utilizes the Borda count method, in which a weighted point system is devised according to the rankings. In the point system we used, 3 points are assigned to the first-ranked candidate in each ballot, 2 points to the second-ranked candidate, 1 point to the third-ranked candidate, and 0 point to the fourth-ranked candidate. The candidate who comes out with the most points wins.
In range voting, voters are asked to rate each candidate with a number within a specified range. The candidate with the highest rating wins. Ballot C uses approval voting, which is a special type of range voting where the range only takes on two possible values, 0 and 1.
